Digital radiographs let us find decay, infection, and bone loss long before they cause symptoms — with dramatically less radiation than film and images you can see on screen the moment they are taken.
What Are Digital X-Rays?
Digital X-rays replace film with an electronic sensor that sends the image straight to a monitor. The result appears in seconds, can be enlarged and adjusted for contrast, and is stored securely in your chart for comparison at future visits.
Roughly half of every tooth sits below the gum line or between contacts where no visual exam can reach. Radiographs are how we see that half, which is why the ADA recommends them periodically as part of routine care.
Digital imaging helps us identify:
- Cavities forming between teeth
- Decay underneath existing fillings and crowns
- Infection at the root tip of a tooth
- Bone loss from gum disease
- Impacted or unerupted teeth, including wisdom teeth
- Cysts and other changes in the jaw
Why Digital Instead of Film
- Up to 90% Less Radiation — A digital sensor needs a fraction of the exposure that film required.
- Instant Results — No chemical processing, so we review the image with you during the same visit.
- Shared on Screen — You see exactly what we see, which makes treatment decisions much easier.
- Environmentally Cleaner — No film, no processing chemicals, no waste.
How Often Do You Need X-Rays?
There is no fixed schedule that applies to everyone. We base the interval on your age, your history of decay, your gum health, and what we can see clinically. Patients with healthy mouths and no history of decay need images far less often than patients under active treatment.
We take radiographs when there is a reason to — never as an automatic add-on — and we always explain why before we do.
Safety and Comfort
The radiation from a full set of digital dental X-rays is comparable to what you receive from natural background sources over a normal day. We still use protective aprons and thyroid collars, and we tailor imaging for children and for patients who are pregnant.
Clear Office Support
Digital images transfer easily to specialists and insurance carriers, which speeds up referrals and claim approvals.

Most patients need bitewing images about once a year and a full series every few years, but we adjust based on your individual risk.
Routine X-rays are generally avoided during pregnancy unless there is an urgent problem. Tell us if you are pregnant or may be, and we will plan accordingly.
Yes. Children benefit from imaging to monitor developing teeth and spacing, using child-sized sensors and reduced settings.
Most dental plans cover diagnostic radiographs at set intervals. Our team confirms your benefits before your appointment.
